285bc5ce24 Implement variant translation in fused adapters (#4534)
* Implement variant translation in fused adapters

This commit implements the most general case of variants for fused
adapter trampolines. Additionally a number of other primitive types are
filled out here to assist with testing variants. The implementation
internally was relatively straightforward given the shape of variants,
but there's room for future optimization as necessary especially around
converting locals to various types.

This commit also introduces a "one off" fuzzer for adapters to ensure
that the generated adapter is valid. I hope to extend this fuzz
generator as more types are implemented to assist in various corner
cases that might arise. For now the fuzzer simply tests that the output
wasm module is valid, not that it actually executes correctly. I hope to
integrate with a fuzzer along the lines of #4307 one day to test the
run-time-correctness of the generated adapters as well, at which point
this fuzzer would become obsolete.

Finally this commit also fixes an issue with `u8` translation where
upper bits weren't zero'd out and were passed raw across modules.
Instead smaller-than-32 types now all mask out their upper bits and do
sign-extension as appropriate for unsigned/signed variants.

* Fuzz memory64 in the new trampoline fuzzer

Currently memory64 isn't supported elsewhere in the component model
implementation of Wasmtime but the trampoline compiler seems as good a
place as any to ensure that it at least works in isolation. This plumbs
through fuzz input into a `memory64` boolean which gets fed into
compilation. Some miscellaneous bugs were fixed as a result to ensure
that memory64 trampolines all validate correctly.

97894bc65e Add initial support for fused adapter trampolines (#4501)
* Add initial support for fused adapter trampolines

This commit lands a significant new piece of functionality to Wasmtime's
implementation of the component model in the form of the implementation
of fused adapter trampolines. Internally within a component core wasm
modules can communicate with each other by having their exports
`canon lift`'d to get `canon lower`'d into a different component. This
signifies that two components are communicating through a statically
known interface via the canonical ABI at this time. Previously Wasmtime
was able to identify that this communication was happening but it simply
panicked with `unimplemented!` upon seeing it. This commit is the
beginning of filling out this panic location with an actual
implementation.

The implementation route chosen here for fused adapters is to use a
WebAssembly module itself for the implementation. This means that, at
compile time of a component, Wasmtime is generating core WebAssembly
modules which then get recursively compiled within Wasmtime as well. The
choice to use WebAssembly itself as the implementation of fused adapters
stems from a few motivations:

* This does not represent a significant increase in the "trusted
  compiler base" of Wasmtime. Getting the Wasm -> CLIF translation
  correct once is hard enough much less for an entirely different IR to
  CLIF. By generating WebAssembly no new interactions with Cranelift are
  added which drastically reduces the possibilities for mistakes.

* Using WebAssembly means that component adapters are insulated from
  miscompilations and mistakes. If something goes wrong it's defined
  well within the WebAssembly specification how it goes wrong and what
  happens as a result. This means that the "blast zone" for a wrong
  adapter is the component instance but not the entire host itself.
  Accesses to linear memory are guaranteed to be in-bounds and otherwise
  handled via well-defined traps.

* A fully-finished fused adapter compiler is expected to be a
  significant and quite complex component of Wasmtime. Functionality
  along these lines is expected to be needed for Web-based polyfills of
  the component model and by using core WebAssembly it provides the
  opportunity to share code between Wasmtime and these polyfills for the
  component model.

* Finally the runtime implementation of managing WebAssembly modules is
  already implemented and quite easy to integrate with, so representing
  fused adapters with WebAssembly results in very little extra support
  necessary for the runtime implementation of instantiating and managing
  a component.

The compiler added in this commit is dubbed Wasmtime's Fused Adapter
Compiler of Trampolines (FACT) because who doesn't like deriving a name
from an acronym. Currently the trampoline compiler is limited in its
support for interface types and only supports a few primitives. I plan
on filing future PRs to flesh out the support here for all the variants
of `InterfaceType`. For now this PR is primarily focused on all of the
other infrastructure for the addition of a trampoline compiler.

With the choice to use core WebAssembly to implement fused adapters it
means that adapters need to be inserted into a module. Unfortunately
adapters cannot all go into a single WebAssembly module because adapters
themselves have dependencies which may be provided transitively through
instances that were instantiated with other adapters. This means that a
significant chunk of this PR (`adapt.rs`) is dedicated to determining
precisely which adapters go into precisely which adapter modules. This
partitioning process attempts to make large modules wherever it can to
cut down on core wasm instantiations but is likely not optimal as
it's just a simple heuristic today.

With all of this added together it's now possible to start writing
`*.wast` tests that internally have adapted modules communicating with
one another. A `fused.wast` test suite was added as part of this PR
which is the beginning of tests for the support of the fused adapter
compiler added in this PR. Currently this is primarily testing some
various topologies of adapters along with direct/indirect modes. This
will grow many more tests over time as more types are supported.

Overall I'm not 100% satisfied with the testing story of this PR. When a
test fails it's very difficult to debug since everything is written in
the text format of WebAssembly meaning there's no "conveniences" to
print out the state of the world when things go wrong and easily debug.
I think this will become even more apparent as more tests are written
for more types in subsequent PRs. At this time though I know of no
better alternative other than leaning pretty heavily on fuzz-testing to
ensure this is all exercised.

f638b390b6 Refactor some internals of wasmtime-cranelift (#4202)
* Split `wasm_to_host_trampoline` into pieces

In the upcoming component model supoprt for imports my plan is to reuse
some of these pieces but not the entirety of the current
`wasm_to_host_trampoline`. In an effort to make that diff smaller this
commit splits up the function preemptively into pieces to get reused
later.

* Delete unused `for_each_libcall` macros

Came across this when working in the object support for cranelift.

* Refactor some object creation details

This commit refactors some of the internals around creating an object
file in the wasmtime-cranelift integration. The old `ObjectBuilder` is
now named `ModuleTextBuilder` and is only used to create the text
section rather than other sections too. This helps maintain the
invariant that the unwind information section is placed directly after
the text section without having an odd API for doing this.

Additionally the unwind information creation is moved externally from
the `ModuleTextBuilder` to a standalone structure. This separate
structure is currently in use in the component model work I'm doing
although I may change that to using the `ModuleTextBuilder` instead. In
any case it seemed nice to encapsulate all of the unwinding information
into one standalone structure.

Finally, the insertion of native debug information has been refactored
to happen in a new `append_dwarf` method to keep all the dwarf-related
stuff together in one place as much as possible.

fcf6208750 Initial skeleton of some component model processing (#4005)
* Initial skeleton of some component model processing

This commit is the first of what will likely be many to implement the
component model proposal in Wasmtime. This will be structured as a
series of incremental commits, most of which haven't been written yet.
My hope is to make this incremental and over time to make this easier to
review and easier to test each step in isolation.

Here much of the skeleton of how components are going to work in
Wasmtime is sketched out. This is not a complete implementation of the
component model so it's not all that useful yet, but some things you can
do are:

* Process the type section into a representation amenable for working
  with in Wasmtime.
* Process the module section and register core wasm modules.
* Process the instance section for core wasm modules.
* Process core wasm module imports.
* Process core wasm instance aliasing.
* Ability to compile a component with core wasm embedded.
* Ability to instantiate a component with no imports.
* Ability to get functions from this component.

This is already starting to diverge from the previous module linking
representation where a `Component` will try to avoid unnecessary
metadata about the component and instead internally only have the bare
minimum necessary to instantiate the module. My hope is we can avoid
constructing most of the index spaces during instantiation only for it
to all ge thrown away. Additionally I'm predicting that we'll need to
see through processing where possible to know how to generate adapters
and where they are fused.

At this time you can't actually call a component's functions, and that's
the next PR that I would like to make.

* Add tests for the component model support

This commit uses the recently updated wasm-tools crates to add tests for
the component model added in the previous commit. This involved updating
the `wasmtime-wast` crate for component-model changes. Currently the
component support there is quite primitive, but enough to at least
instantiate components and verify the internals of Wasmtime are all
working correctly. Additionally some simple tests for the embedding API
have also been added.

39a52ceb4f Implement lazy funcref table and anyfunc initialization. (#3733)
During instance initialization, we build two sorts of arrays eagerly:

- We create an "anyfunc" (a `VMCallerCheckedAnyfunc`) for every function
  in an instance.

- We initialize every element of a funcref table with an initializer to
  a pointer to one of these anyfuncs.

Most instances will not touch (via call_indirect or table.get) all
funcref table elements. And most anyfuncs will never be referenced,
because most functions are never placed in tables or used with
`ref.func`. Thus, both of these initialization tasks are quite wasteful.
Profiling shows that a significant fraction of the remaining
instance-initialization time after our other recent optimizations is
going into these two tasks.

This PR implements two basic ideas:

- The anyfunc array can be lazily initialized as long as we retain the
  information needed to do so. For now, in this PR, we just recreate the
  anyfunc whenever a pointer is taken to it, because doing so is fast
  enough; in the future we could keep some state to know whether the
  anyfunc has been written yet and skip this work if redundant.

  This technique allows us to leave the anyfunc array as uninitialized
  memory, which can be a significant savings. Filling it with
  initialized anyfuncs is very expensive, but even zeroing it is
  expensive: e.g. in a large module, it can be >500KB.

- A funcref table can be lazily initialized as long as we retain a link
  to its corresponding instance and function index for each element. A
  zero in a table element means "uninitialized", and a slowpath does the
  initialization.

Funcref tables are a little tricky because funcrefs can be null. We need
to distinguish "element was initially non-null, but user stored explicit
null later" from "element never touched" (ie the lazy init should not
blow away an explicitly stored null). We solve this by stealing the LSB
from every funcref (anyfunc pointer): when the LSB is set, the funcref
is initialized and we don't hit the lazy-init slowpath. We insert the
bit on storing to the table and mask it off after loading.

We do have to set up a precomputed array of `FuncIndex`s for the table
in order for this to work. We do this as part of the module compilation.

This PR also refactors the way that the runtime crate gains access to
information computed during module compilation.

Performance effect measured with in-tree benches/instantiation.rs, using
SpiderMonkey built for WASI, and with memfd enabled:

a237e73b5a Remove some allocations in CodeMemory (#3253)
* Remove some allocations in `CodeMemory`

This commit removes the `FinishedFunctions` type as well as allocations
associated with trampolines when allocating inside of a `CodeMemory`.
The main goal of this commit is to improve the time spent in
`CodeMemory` where currently today a good portion of time is spent
simply parsing symbol names and trying to extract function indices from
them. Instead this commit implements a new strategy (different from #3236)
where compilation records offset/length information for all
functions/trampolines so this doesn't need to be re-learned from the
object file later.

A consequence of this commit is that this offset information will be
decoded/encoded through `bincode` unconditionally, but we can also
optimize that later if necessary as well.

Internally this involved quite a bit of refactoring since the previous
map for `FinishedFunctions` was relatively heavily relied upon.

12515e6646 Move trap information to a section of the compiled image (#3241)
This commit moves the `traps` field of `FunctionInfo` into a section of
the compiled artifact produced by Cranelift. This section is quite large
and when previously encoded/decoded with `bincode` this can take quite
some time to process. Traps are expected to be relatively rare and it's
not necessarily the right tradeoff to spend so much time
serializing/deserializing this data, so this commit offloads the section
into a custom-encoded binary format located elsewhere in the compiled image.

This is similar to #3240 in its goal which is to move very large pieces
of metadata to their own sections to avoid decoding anything when we
load a precompiled modules. This also has a small benefit that it's
slightly more efficient storage for the trap information too, but that's
a negligible benefit.

This is part of #3230 to make loading modules fast.

87c33c2969 Remove wasmtime-environ's dependency on cranelift-codegen (#3199)
* Move `CompiledFunction` into wasmtime-cranelift

This commit moves the `wasmtime_environ::CompiledFunction` type into the
`wasmtime-cranelift` crate. This type has lots of Cranelift-specific
pieces of compilation and doesn't need to be generated by all Wasmtime
compilers. This replaces the usage in the `Compiler` trait with a
`Box<Any>` type that each compiler can select. Each compiler must still
produce a `FunctionInfo`, however, which is shared information we'll
deserialize for each module.

The `wasmtime-debug` crate is also folded into the `wasmtime-cranelift`
crate as a result of this commit. One possibility was to move the
`CompiledFunction` commit into its own crate and have `wasmtime-debug`
depend on that, but since `wasmtime-debug` is Cranelift-specific at this
time it didn't seem like it was too too necessary to keep it separate.
If `wasmtime-debug` supports other backends in the future we can
recreate a new crate, perhaps with it refactored to not depend on
Cranelift.

* Move wasmtime_environ::reference_type

This now belongs in wasmtime-cranelift and nowhere else

* Remove `Type` reexport in wasmtime-environ

One less dependency on `cranelift-codegen`!

* Remove `types` reexport from `wasmtime-environ`

Less cranelift!

* Remove `SourceLoc` from wasmtime-environ

Change the `srcloc`, `start_srcloc`, and `end_srcloc` fields to a custom
`FilePos` type instead of `ir::SourceLoc`. These are only used in a few
places so there's not much to lose from an extra abstraction for these
leaf use cases outside of cranelift.

* Remove wasmtime-environ's dep on cranelift's `StackMap`

This commit "clones" the `StackMap` data structure in to
`wasmtime-environ` to have an independent representation that that
chosen by Cranelift. This allows Wasmtime to decouple this runtime
dependency of stack map information and let the two evolve
independently, if necessary.

An alternative would be to refactor cranelift's implementation into a
separate crate and have wasmtime depend on that but it seemed a bit like
overkill to do so and easier to clone just a few lines for this.

* Define code offsets in wasmtime-environ with `u32`

Don't use Cranelift's `binemit::CodeOffset` alias to define this field
type since the `wasmtime-environ` crate will be losing the
`cranelift-codegen` dependency soon.

* Commit to using `cranelift-entity` in Wasmtime

This commit removes the reexport of `cranelift-entity` from the
`wasmtime-environ` crate and instead directly depends on the
`cranelift-entity` crate in all referencing crates. The original reason
for the reexport was to make cranelift version bumps easier since it's
less versions to change, but nowadays we have a script to do that.
Otherwise this encourages crates to use whatever they want from
`cranelift-entity` since  we'll always depend on the whole crate.

It's expected that the `cranelift-entity` crate will continue to be a
lean crate in dependencies and suitable for use at both runtime and
compile time. Consequently there's no need to avoid its usage in
Wasmtime at runtime, since "remove Cranelift at compile time" is
primarily about the `cranelift-codegen` crate.

* Remove most uses of `cranelift-codegen` in `wasmtime-environ`

There's only one final use remaining, which is the reexport of
`TrapCode`, which will get handled later.

* Limit the glob-reexport of `cranelift_wasm`

This commit removes the glob reexport of `cranelift-wasm` from the
`wasmtime-environ` crate. This is intended to explicitly define what
we're reexporting and is a transitionary step to curtail the amount of
dependencies taken on `cranelift-wasm` throughout the codebase. For
example some functions used by debuginfo mapping are better imported
directly from the crate since they're Cranelift-specific. Note that
this is intended to be a temporary state affairs, soon this reexport
will be gone entirely.

Additionally this commit reduces imports from `cranelift_wasm` and also
primarily imports from `crate::wasm` within `wasmtime-environ` to get a
better sense of what's imported from where and what will need to be
shared.

* Extract types from cranelift-wasm to cranelift-wasm-types

This commit creates a new crate called `cranelift-wasm-types` and
extracts type definitions from the `cranelift-wasm` crate into this new
crate. The purpose of this crate is to be a shared definition of wasm
types that can be shared both by compilers (like Cranelift) as well as
wasm runtimes (e.g. Wasmtime). This new `cranelift-wasm-types` crate
doesn't depend on `cranelift-codegen` and is the final step in severing
the unconditional dependency from Wasmtime to `cranelift-codegen`.

The final refactoring in this commit is to then reexport this crate from
`wasmtime-environ`, delete the `cranelift-codegen` dependency, and then
update all `use` paths to point to these new types.

The main change of substance here is that the `TrapCode` enum is
mirrored from Cranelift into this `cranelift-wasm-types` crate. While
this unfortunately results in three definitions (one more which is
non-exhaustive in Wasmtime itself) it's hopefully not too onerous and
ideally something we can patch up in the future.

e8aa7bb53b Reimplement how unwind information is stored (#3180)
* Reimplement how unwind information is stored

This commit is a major refactoring of how unwind information is stored
after compilation of a function has finished. Previously we would store
the raw `UnwindInfo` as a result of compilation and this would get
serialized/deserialized alongside the rest of the ELF object that
compilation creates. Whenever functions were registered with
`CodeMemory` this would also result in registering unwinding information
dynamically at runtime, which in the case of Unix, for example, would
dynamically created FDE/CIE entries on-the-fly.

Eventually I'd like to support compiling Wasmtime without Cranelift, but
this means that `UnwindInfo` wouldn't be easily available to decode into
and create unwinding information from. To solve this I've changed the
ELF object created to have the unwinding information encoded into it
ahead-of-time so loading code into memory no longer needs to create
unwinding tables. This change has two different implementations for
Windows/Unix:

* On Windows the implementation was much easier. The unwinding
  information on Windows is already stored after the function itself in
  the text section. This was actually slightly duplicated in object
  building and in code memory allocation. Now the object building
  continues to do the same, recording unwinding information after
  functions, and code memory no longer manually tracks this.
  Additionally Wasmtime will emit a special custom section in the object
  file with unwinding information which is the list of
  `RUNTIME_FUNCTION` structures that `RtlAddFunctionTable` expects. This
  means that the object file has all the information precompiled into it
  and registration at runtime is simply passing a few pointers around to
  the runtime.

* Unix was a little bit more difficult than Windows. Today a `.eh_frame`
  section is created on-the-fly with offsets in FDEs specified as the
  absolute address that functions are loaded at. This absolute
  address hindered the ability to precompile the FDE into the object
  file itself. I've switched how addresses are encoded, though, to using
  `DW_EH_PE_pcrel` which means that FDE addresses are now specified
  relative to the FDE itself. This means that we can maintain a fixed
  offset between the `.eh_frame` loaded in memory and the beginning of
  code memory. When doing so this enables precompiling the `.eh_frame`
  section into the object file and at runtime when loading an object no
  further construction of unwinding information is needed.

The overall result of this commit is that unwinding information is no
longer stored in its cranelift-data-structure form on disk. This means
that this unwinding information format is only present during
compilation, which will make it that much easier to compile out
cranelift in the future.

This commit also significantly refactors `CodeMemory` since the way
unwinding information is handled is not much different from before.
Previously `CodeMemory` was suitable for incrementally adding more and
more functions to it, but nowadays a `CodeMemory` either lives per
module (in which case all functions are known up front) or it's created
once-per-`Func::new` with two trampolines. In both cases we know all
functions up front so the functionality of incrementally adding more and
more segments is no longer needed. This commit removes the ability to
add a function-at-a-time in `CodeMemory` and instead it can now only
load objects in their entirety. A small helper function is added to
build a small object file for trampolines in `Func::new` to handle
allocation there.

Finally, this commit also folds the `wasmtime-obj` crate directly into
the `wasmtime-cranelift` crate and its builder structure to be more
amenable to this strategy of managing unwinding tables.

It is not intentional to have any real functional change as a result of
this commit. This might accelerate loading a module from cache slightly
since less work is needed to manage the unwinding information, but
that's just a side benefit from the main goal of this commit which is to
remove the dependence on cranelift unwinding information being available
at runtime.

e68aa99588 Implement the memory64 proposal in Wasmtime (#3153)
* Implement the memory64 proposal in Wasmtime

This commit implements the WebAssembly [memory64 proposal][proposal] in
both Wasmtime and Cranelift. In terms of work done Cranelift ended up
needing very little work here since most of it was already prepared for
64-bit memories at one point or another. Most of the work in Wasmtime is
largely refactoring, changing a bunch of `u32` values to something else.

A number of internal and public interfaces are changing as a result of
this commit, for example:

* Acessors on `wasmtime::Memory` that work with pages now all return
  `u64` unconditionally rather than `u32`. This makes it possible to
  accommodate 64-bit memories with this API, but we may also want to
  consider `usize` here at some point since the host can't grow past
  `usize`-limited pages anyway.

* The `wasmtime::Limits` structure is removed in favor of
  minimum/maximum methods on table/memory types.

* Many libcall intrinsics called by jit code now unconditionally take
  `u64` arguments instead of `u32`. Return values are `usize`, however,
  since the return value, if successful, is always bounded by host
  memory while arguments can come from any guest.

* The `heap_addr` clif instruction now takes a 64-bit offset argument
  instead of a 32-bit one. It turns out that the legalization of
  `heap_addr` already worked with 64-bit offsets, so this change was
  fairly trivial to make.

* The runtime implementation of mmap-based linear memories has changed
  to largely work in `usize` quantities in its API and in bytes instead
  of pages. This simplifies various aspects and reflects that
  mmap-memories are always bound by `usize` since that's what the host
  is using to address things, and additionally most calculations care
  about bytes rather than pages except for the very edge where we're
  going to/from wasm.

Overall I've tried to minimize the amount of `as` casts as possible,
using checked `try_from` and checked arithemtic with either error
handling or explicit `unwrap()` calls to tell us about bugs in the
future. Most locations have relatively obvious things to do with various
implications on various hosts, and I think they should all be roughly of
the right shape but time will tell. I mostly relied on the compiler
complaining that various types weren't aligned to figure out
type-casting, and I manually audited some of the more obvious locations.
I suspect we have a number of hidden locations that will panic on 32-bit
hosts if 64-bit modules try to run there, but otherwise I think we
should be generally ok (famous last words). In any case I wouldn't want
to enable this by default naturally until we've fuzzed it for some time.

In terms of the actual underlying implementation, no one should expect
memory64 to be all that fast. Right now it's implemented with
"dynamic" heaps which have a few consequences:

* All memory accesses are bounds-checked. I'm not sure how aggressively
  Cranelift tries to optimize out bounds checks, but I suspect not a ton
  since we haven't stressed this much historically.

* Heaps are always precisely sized. This means that every call to
  `memory.grow` will incur a `memcpy` of memory from the old heap to the
  new. We probably want to at least look into `mremap` on Linux and
  otherwise try to implement schemes where dynamic heaps have some
  reserved pages to grow into to help amortize the cost of
  `memory.grow`.

The memory64 spec test suite is scheduled to now run on CI, but as with
all the other spec test suites it's really not all that comprehensive.
I've tried adding more tests for basic things as I've had to implement
guards for them, but I wouldn't really consider the testing adequate
from just this PR itself. I did try to take care in one test to actually
allocate a 4gb+ heap and then avoid running that in the pooling
allocator or in emulation because otherwise that may fail or take
excessively long.

c91e14d83f Precompute fields in VMOffsets
This commit updates the implementation of `VMOffsets` to frontload all
checked arithmetic on construction of the `VMOffsets` which allows
eliding all checked arithmetic when accessing the fields of `VMOffsets`.
For testing and such this adds a new constructor as well from a new
`VMOffsetsFields` structure which is a clone of the old definition.

This should help speed up some profile hot spots I've been seeing where
with all the checked arithmetic on field sizes this was slowing down the
various accessors during instantiation (which uses `VMOffsets` to
initialize various fields of the `VMContext`).

73cda83548 Propagate module-linking types to wasmtime (#2115)
This commit adds lots of plumbing to get the type section from the
module linking proposal plumbed all the way through to the `wasmtime`
crate and the `wasmtime-c-api` crate. This isn't all that useful right
now because Wasmtime doesn't support imported/exported
modules/instances, but this is all necessary groundwork to getting that
exported at some point. I've added some light tests but I suspect the
bulk of the testing will come in a future commit.

One major change in this commit is that `SignatureIndex` no longer
follows type type index space in a wasm module. Instead a new
`TypeIndex` type is used to track that. Function signatures, still
indexed by `SignatureIndex`, are then packed together tightly.

693c6ea771 wasmtime: Extract cranelift/lightbeam compilers to separate crates (#2117)
This commit extracts the two implementations of `Compiler` into two
separate crates, `wasmtime-cranelfit` and `wasmtime-lightbeam`. The
`wasmtime-jit` crate then depends on these two and instantiates them
appropriately. The goal here is to start reducing the weight of the
`wasmtime-environ` crate, which currently serves as a common set of
types between all `wasmtime-*` crates. Long-term I'd like to remove the
dependency on Cranelift from `wasmtime-environ`, but that's going to
take a lot more work.

In the meantime I figure it's a good way to get started by separating
out the lightbeam/cranelift function compilers from the
`wasmtime-environ` crate. We can continue to iterate on moving things
out in the future, too.

65eaca35dd Refactor where results of compilation are stored (#2086)
* Refactor where results of compilation are stored

This commit refactors the internals of compilation in Wasmtime to change
where results of individual function compilation are stored. Previously
compilation resulted in many maps being returned, and compilation
results generally held all these maps together. This commit instead
switches this to have all metadata stored in a `CompiledFunction`
instead of having a separate map for each item that can be stored.

The motivation for this is primarily to help out with future
module-linking-related PRs. What exactly "module level" is depends on
how we interpret modules and how many modules are in play, so it's a bit
easier for operations in wasmtime to work at the function level where
possible. This means that we don't have to pass around multiple
different maps and a function index, but instead just one map or just
one entry representing a compiled function.

Additionally this change updates where the parallelism of compilation
happens, pushing it into `wasmtime-jit` instead of `wasmtime-environ`.
This is another goal where `wasmtime-jit` will have more knowledge about
module-level pieces with module linking in play. User-facing-wise this
should be the same in terms of parallel compilation, though.

The ultimate goal of this refactoring is to make it easier for the
results of compilation to actually be a set of wasm modules. This means
we won't be able to have a map-per-metadata where the primary key is the
function index, because there will be many modules within one "object
file".

* Don't clear out fields, just don't store them

Persist a smaller set of fields in `CompilationArtifacts` instead of
trying to clear fields out and dynamically not accessing them.

This commit updates debuginfo parsing to happen during the main
translation of the original wasm module. This avoid re-parsing the wasm
module twice (at least the section-level headers). Additionally this
ties debuginfo directly to a `ModuleTranslation` which makes it easier
to process debuginfo for nested modules in the upcoming module linking
proposal.

The changes here are summarized by taking the `read_debuginfo` function
and merging it with the main module translation that happens which is
driven by cranelift. Some new hooks were added to the module environment
trait to support this, but most of it was integrating with existing hooks.

58bb5dd953 wasmtime: Add support for func.ref and table.grow with funcrefs
`funcref`s are implemented as `NonNull<VMCallerCheckedAnyfunc>`.

This should be more efficient than using a `VMExternRef` that points at a
`VMCallerCheckedAnyfunc` because it gets rid of an indirection, dynamic
allocation, and some reference counting.

Note that the null function reference is *NOT* a null pointer; it is a
`VMCallerCheckedAnyfunc` that has a null `func_ptr` member.

f30ce1fe97 externref: implement stack map-based garbage collection
For host VM code, we use plain reference counting, where cloning increments
the reference count, and dropping decrements it. We can avoid many of the
on-stack increment/decrement operations that typically plague the
performance of reference counting via Rust's ownership and borrowing system.
Moving a `VMExternRef` avoids mutating its reference count, and borrowing it
either avoids the reference count increment or delays it until if/when the
`VMExternRef` is cloned.

When passing a `VMExternRef` into compiled Wasm code, we don't want to do
reference count mutations for every compiled `local.{get,set}`, nor for
every function call. Therefore, we use a variation of **deferred reference
counting**, where we only mutate reference counts when storing
`VMExternRef`s somewhere that outlives the activation: into a global or
table. Simultaneously, we over-approximate the set of `VMExternRef`s that
are inside Wasm function activations. Periodically, we walk the stack at GC
safe points, and use stack map information to precisely identify the set of
`VMExternRef`s inside Wasm activations. Then we take the difference between
this precise set and our over-approximation, and decrement the reference
count for each of the `VMExternRef`s that are in our over-approximation but
not in the precise set. Finally, the over-approximation is replaced with the
precise set.

The `VMExternRefActivationsTable` implements the over-approximized set of
`VMExternRef`s referenced by Wasm activations. Calling a Wasm function and
passing it a `VMExternRef` moves the `VMExternRef` into the table, and the
compiled Wasm function logically "borrows" the `VMExternRef` from the
table. Similarly, `global.get` and `table.get` operations clone the gotten
`VMExternRef` into the `VMExternRefActivationsTable` and then "borrow" the
reference out of the table.

When a `VMExternRef` is returned to host code from a Wasm function, the host
increments the reference count (because the reference is logically
"borrowed" from the `VMExternRefActivationsTable` and the reference count
from the table will be dropped at the next GC).

c9a0ba81a0 Implement interrupting wasm code, reimplement stack overflow (#1490)
* Implement interrupting wasm code, reimplement stack overflow

This commit is a relatively large change for wasmtime with two main
goals:

* Primarily this enables interrupting executing wasm code with a trap,
  preventing infinite loops in wasm code. Note that resumption of the
  wasm code is not a goal of this commit.

* Additionally this commit reimplements how we handle stack overflow to
  ensure that host functions always have a reasonable amount of stack to
  run on. This fixes an issue where we might longjmp out of a host
  function, skipping destructors.

Lots of various odds and ends end up falling out in this commit once the
two goals above were implemented. The strategy for implementing this was
also lifted from Spidermonkey and existing functionality inside of
Cranelift. I've tried to write up thorough documentation of how this all
works in `crates/environ/src/cranelift.rs` where gnarly-ish bits are.

A brief summary of how this works is that each function and each loop
header now checks to see if they're interrupted. Interrupts and the
stack overflow check are actually folded into one now, where function
headers check to see if they've run out of stack and the sentinel value
used to indicate an interrupt, checked in loop headers, tricks functions
into thinking they're out of stack. An interrupt is basically just
writing a value to a location which is read by JIT code.

When interrupts are delivered and what triggers them has been left up to
embedders of the `wasmtime` crate. The `wasmtime::Store` type has a
method to acquire an `InterruptHandle`, where `InterruptHandle` is a
`Send` and `Sync` type which can travel to other threads (or perhaps
even a signal handler) to get notified from. It's intended that this
provides a good degree of flexibility when interrupting wasm code. Note
though that this does have a large caveat where interrupts don't work
when you're interrupting host code, so if you've got a host import
blocking for a long time an interrupt won't actually be received until
the wasm starts running again.

Some fallout included from this change is:

* Unix signal handlers are no longer registered with `SA_ONSTACK`.
  Instead they run on the native stack the thread was already using.
  This is possible since stack overflow isn't handled by hitting the
  guard page, but rather it's explicitly checked for in wasm now. Native
  stack overflow will continue to abort the process as usual.

* Unix sigaltstack management is now no longer necessary since we don't
  use it any more.

* Windows no longer has any need to reset guard pages since we no longer
  try to recover from faults on guard pages.

* On all targets probestack intrinsics are disabled since we use a
  different mechanism for catching stack overflow.

* The C API has been updated with interrupts handles. An example has
  also been added which shows off how to interrupt a module.

holds an `InstanceHandle` to dynamically hold the instance live rather
than being scoped to a lifetime.

This significantly simplifies the public API, as it's relatively common
to need the names, and this avoids the need to do a zip with

usage particularly in cases where there are temporary instances.

* Remove `Instance::module`.

This doesn't quite remove `Instance`'s `module` member, it gets a step
closer.

* Use a InstanceHandle utility function.

* Don't consume self in the `Func::get*` methods.

Instead, just create a closure containing the instance handle and the
export for them to call.

* Use `ExactSizeIterator` to avoid needing separate `num_*` methods.

f7e9f86ba9 Refactor unwind generation in Cranelift.
This commit makes the following changes to unwind information generation in
Cranelift:

* Remove frame layout change implementation in favor of processing the prologue
  and epilogue instructions when unwind information is requested.  This also
  means this work is no longer performed for Windows, which didn't utilize it.
  It also helps simplify the prologue and epilogue generation code.

* Remove the unwind sink implementation that required each unwind information
  to be represented in final form. For FDEs, this meant writing a
  complete frame table per function, which wastes 20 bytes or so for each
  function with duplicate CIEs.  This also enables Cranelift users to collect the
  unwind information and write it as a single frame table.

* For System V calling convention, the unwind information is no longer stored
  in code memory (it's only a requirement for Windows ABI to do so).  This allows
  for more compact code memory for modules with a lot of functions.

* Deletes some duplicate code relating to frame table generation.  Users can
  now simply use gimli to create a frame table from each function's unwind
  information.

c8ab1e293e Improve robustness of cache loading/storing (#974)
* Improve robustness of cache loading/storing

Today wasmtime incorrectly loads compiled compiled modules from the
global cache when toggling settings such as optimizations. For example
if you execute `wasmtime foo.wasm` that will cache globally an
unoptimized version of the wasm module. If you then execute `wasmtime -O
foo.wasm` it would then reload the unoptimized version from cache, not
realizing the compilation settings were different, and use that instead.
This can lead to very surprising behavior naturally!

This commit updates how the cache is managed in an attempt to make it
much more robust against these sorts of issues. This takes a leaf out of
rustc's playbook and models the cache with a function that looks like:

    fn load<T: Hash>(
        &self,
        data: T,
        compute: fn(T) -> CacheEntry,
    ) -> CacheEntry;

The goal here is that it guarantees that all the `data` necessary to
`compute` the result of the cache entry is hashable and stored into the
hash key entry. This was previously open-coded and manually managed
where items were hashed explicitly, but this construction guarantees
that everything reasonable `compute` could use to compile the module is
stored in `data`, which is itself hashable.

This refactoring then resulted in a few workarounds and a few fixes,
including the original issue:

* The `Module` type was split into `Module` and `ModuleLocal` where only
  the latter is hashed. The previous hash function for a `Module` left
  out items like the `start_func` and didn't hash items like the imports
  of the module. Omitting the `start_func` was fine since compilation
  didn't actually use it, but omitting imports seemed uncomfortable
  because while compilation didn't use the import values it did use the
  *number* of imports, which seems like it should then be put into the
  cache key. The `ModuleLocal` type now derives `Hash` to guarantee that
  all of its contents affect the hash key.

* The `ModuleTranslationState` from `cranelift-wasm` doesn't implement
  `Hash` which means that we have a manual wrapper to work around that.
  This will be fixed with an upstream implementation, since this state
  affects the generated wasm code. Currently this is just a map of
  signatures, which is present in `Module` anyway, so we should be good
  for the time being.

* Hashing `dyn TargetIsa` was also added, where previously it was not
  fully hashed. Previously only the target name was used as part of the
  cache key, but crucially the flags of compilation were omitted (for
  example the optimization flags). Unfortunately the trait object itself
  is not hashable so we still have to manually write a wrapper to hash
  it, but we likely want to add upstream some utilities to hash isa
  objects into cranelift itself. For now though we can continue to add
  hashed fields as necessary.

Overall the goal here was to use the compiler to expose what we're not
hashing, and then make sure we organize data and write the right code to
ensure everything is hashed, and nothing more.

70345aff31 Remove all global state from the caching system (#863)
* Remove all global state from the caching system

This commit is a continuation of an effort to remove usages of
`lazy_static!` and similar global state macros which can otherwise be
accomodated with passing objects around. Previously there was a global
cache system initialized per-process, but it was initialized in a bit of
a roundabout way and wasn't actually reachable from the `wasmtime` crate
itself. The changes here remove all global state, refactor many of the
internals in the cache system, and makes configuration possible through
the `wasmtime` crate.

Specifically some changes here are:

* Usage of `lazy_static!` and many `static` items in the cache module
  have all been removed.
* Global `cache_config()`, `worker()`, and `init()` functions have all
  been removed. Instead a `CacheConfig` is a "root object" which
  internally owns its worker and passing around the `CacheConfig` is
  required for cache usage.
* The `wasmtime::Config` structure has grown options to load and parse
  cache files at runtime. Currently only loading files is supported,
  although we can likely eventually support programmatically configuring
  APIs as well.
* Usage of the `spin` crate has been removed and the dependency is removed.
* The internal `errors` field of `CacheConfig` is removed, instead
  changing all relevant methods to return a `Result<()>` instead of
  storing errors internally.
* Tests have all been updated with the new interfaces and APIs.

Functionally no real change is intended here. Usage of the `wasmtime`
CLI, for example, should still enable the cache by default.

Largely avoid storing strings at all in the `wasmtime-*` internal
crates, and instead only store strings in a separate global cache
specific to the `wasmtime` crate itself. This global cache is inserted
and removed from dynamically as modules are created and deallocated, and
the global cache is consulted whenever a `Trap` is created to
symbolicate any wasm frames.

This also avoids the need to thread `module_name` through the jit crates
and back, and additionally removes the need for `ModuleSyncString`.

39e57e3e9a Migrate back to std:: stylistically (#554)
* Migrate back to `std::` stylistically

This commit moves away from idioms such as `alloc::` and `core::` as
imports of standard data structures and types. Instead it migrates all
crates to uniformly use `std::` for importing standard data structures
and types. This also removes the `std` and `core` features from all
crates to and removes any conditional checking for `feature = "std"`

All of this support was previously added in #407 in an effort to make
wasmtime/cranelift "`no_std` compatible". Unfortunately though this
change comes at a cost:

* The usage of `alloc` and `core` isn't idiomatic. Especially trying to
  dual between types like `HashMap` from `std` as well as from
  `hashbrown` causes imports to be surprising in some cases.
* Unfortunately there was no CI check that crates were `no_std`, so none
  of them actually were. Many crates still imported from `std` or
  depended on crates that used `std`.

It's important to note, however, that **this does not mean that wasmtime
will not run in embedded environments**. The style of the code today and
idioms aren't ready in Rust to support this degree of multiplexing and
makes it somewhat difficult to keep up with the style of `wasmtime`.
Instead it's intended that embedded runtime support will be added as
necessary. Currently only `std` is necessary to build `wasmtime`, and
platforms that natively need to execute `wasmtime` will need to use a
Rust target that supports `std`. Note though that not all of `std` needs
to be supported, but instead much of it could be configured off to
return errors, and `wasmtime` would be configured to gracefully handle
errors.

The goal of this PR is to move `wasmtime` back to idiomatic usage of
features/`std`/imports/etc and help development in the short-term.
Long-term when platform concerns arise (if any) they can be addressed by
moving back to `no_std` crates (but fixing the issues mentioned above)
or ensuring that the target in Rust has `std` available.
